Matt Henderson gives a behind the scenes look at life on the investment team.
How did you get started in the industry?
During my time in secondary school I enrolled on a business studies course and this is where I developed my interests of how companies operate. When the time came to pick my A-level course, I decided to continue at a more advanced level.
I spent two summers working at True Potential and when I had the opportunity to begin my working life here I jumped at the chance knowing that I would gain valuable experience, working for a dynamic company in a very interesting part of the business.
Tell us about your area of expertise?
I began working on the fund governance side of the business, learning what is required to run our OEICs from a regulatory perspective. This gave me a solid grounding and understanding of what is required each and every day as our clients trust us to look after their investments properly.
I began studying for my professional qualifications whilst building up knowledge of the funds and after many long hours of studying I now am delighted to say that I have my Investment Management Certificate, this took me eighteen months and has added considerably to my knowledge.
I am now putting into practice what I have learned as I joined the Investment Management team as an analyst during the last quarter of 2017.
My studying hasn’t stopped as I am now working on CAIA which is a specialist qualification in Alternative Investments, something I believe will be at the forefront of fund management in the coming years.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
Being at the centre of our investment management firm is exciting.
Financial markets are so dynamic – they are constantly changing, and re-evaluation of positioning and strategies is constantly needed to offer the best for our clients. On top of this we receive eight independent market views from some of the biggest names in the industry which tests our own understanding and ideas. This is extraordinary and brings me into contact with the leading investment houses in the world.
What makes the company special?
We are a major force in the UK investment market and we command a great deal of respect, evidence of this is the high profile visitors who frequently come to see our investment operation.
On a personal level, the ability of the company to offer opportunity to those who want it. If they believe you are ready, they won’t hold you back.
What are you most excited about in regard to the future of the company?
When I first joined the company around two years ago I remember all the team predicting when we would hit £1bn within the True Potential Portfolios. Sitting here today we have £5bn, so the rate of growth within a short time has been staggering.
