Whilst studying Finance and Investment Management at university, I gained first-hand experience of financial markets, and learned a variety of quantitative and financial tools to construct, rebalance and evaluate investment portfolios.
This insight was the driver for me wanting to get into the industry. A friend introduced me to True Potential where I was fortunate to be given the opportunity to work alongside our Chief Investment Officer to establish the Investment Management firm at True Potential.
Tell us about your area of expertise?
My expertise lies within portfolio and risk management. Making sure we build, manage and evolve portfolios to achieve the optimal mix of assets to minimise risk but maximise return at an attractive and competitive price.
We’ve also recently launched our own funds which takes that process a stage further. Every day we have to evaluate the markets and make a decision on where to invest the most recent cash inflows from investors.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
Interpreting and digesting financial markets. Every day is different. Like clients we have a long-term strategy but we also have to be alive to what is happening in the markets today and what might be happening one month, six months, twelve months from now. Obviously, no one knows for sure how markets are going to behave but it is the challenge of formulating an investment strategy for an uncertain future that makes the job exciting.
What makes the company special?
Its ability to innovate, to change, to try something new. You can’t afford to stand still and we’re always looking at ways to enhance the client’s experience, to do things better, to offer new services and give value for money.
What are the most important things to consider for first time investors?
Start early, set yourself a goal of what you want and over what time period. Also, don’t be afraid to educate yourself, there is a lot of good content which can be found from our website.
The True Potential Centre for the Public Understanding of Finance sponsors an open university course, which is free for anyone wanting to understand more.
What are you most excited about in regard to the future of the company?
The future growth of the business. When I joined True Potential five years ago, there was no Investment Management firm, no True Potential Portfolios and no True Potential Funds. Today, we have over 7 billion pounds of clients investments on our platform. We have 33 separate funds and 10 portfolios directly managing 5 billion pounds of client assets. We are actively pursuing a series of new initiatives that will see this figures grow and True Potential is committed to the ongoing development of its investment proposition with the client’s interests first and foremost.
With investing, your capital is at risk. Investments can fluctuate in value and you may get back less than you invest. Past performance is not a guide to future performance. Tax rules can change at any time. This blog is not personal financial advice.
